The dull rom-com series fails to deliver even a single authentic moment, with every concept approached in the strangest and least engaging manner imaginable.
In the Disney+ Hotstar series *My Perfect Husband*, four consecutive episodes are titled: Unraveling Ties, Past Revealed, Secrets Unveiled, and Revelations Unfold. The similarity in these titles serves as a subtle hint at the absurdly nonsensical content that follows, where nothing truly resonates. Take the opening scenes, for instance. Sathyaraj portrays Bharathi, a peculiar psychology professor who seems entirely unqualified for the role. He’s seen with a book titled *Introduction to Psychology*, yet it’s clear he hasn’t even glanced at the first page, given his shockingly insensitive and ignorant behavior throughout the series. Consider his remarks to two female colleagues: “Vimala, it seems you’ve gained some weight. Aren’t you taking walks? No excuses. If you want to stay fit and youthful, you need to take care of yourself. Just look at Mary Miss—she walks 2 kilometers to her bus every day.” When Mary Miss questions how he knows this, Bharathi responds that it’s so she feels he’s with her on her walks. That line gave me chills, yet the background music tries to frame it as comedic (the subtitle even reads ‘flirtatious music’). And naturally, Vimala develops a crush on Bharathi—who could resist? Every concept in *My Perfect Husband* is either presented in a bizarre or completely unengaging manner. Bharathi’s creepy behavior and flirtations with other women are established long before his wife, Saraswathi (played by Seetha), discovers the truth. While Saraswathi is taken aback upon learning this, by the time the revelation occurs, the impact is already diminished.
The only aspect that seems to bring any level of interest is the camera work. For instance, we witness a conversation taking place on a stationary boat, captured from another boat approaching. Additionally, there’s a scene where two characters are shown sitting on a swing from a bird’s-eye view. While these moments lack deeper significance, they do provide a brief distraction from the chaos unfolding in the story. So, perhaps that’s a small win.
Leading up to the final episode, Bharathi remarks, “We just began. We should run only from now, for half an hour at least.” This statement introduces a chilling sense of dread for the audience.
On a side note, the most enjoyable moments while watching *My Perfect Husband* were the advertisements that aired during the breaks on Hotstar. They offered much-needed relief.
