In movies, rain often accompanies intense scenes, like the death of a significant character. This classic symbol implies that nature mourns the departed, shedding tears alongside the characters. In ‘Ullozhukku,’ where death plays a central role, the rain holds a deeper meaning. The relentless downpour delays a funeral for days, unveiling buried secrets that the family had kept hidden for years.

The story kicks off with Anju (played by Parvathy Thiruvothu), initially portrayed in a blissful moment with her boyfriend Rajeev (Arjun Radhakrishnan), only to transition into a subdued bride wedded to Thomaskutty (Prashant Murali). Despite her apparent unhappiness with the marriage, Anju puts on a facade of cheerfulness. As her mother tearfully leaves her at her new home, her mother-in-law Leelamma (Urvashi) steps in, promising to care for her like her own daughter, marking the beginning of a strong bond. However, it’s Thomaskutty’s death that unravels hidden tensions within the family.

Credit is due to writer-director Christo Tomy for the seamless storytelling that gradually reveals the characters’ emotional depths. Anju, a complex character, juggles multiple conflicting emotions. Even while tending to her ailing husband, she maintains a secret relationship with her boyfriend. Planning to elope after discovering her pregnancy, Anju’s intentions are thwarted by Thomaskutty’s untimely demise. Parvathy skillfully internalizes this intricate role, portraying the complexities with finesse.
